Hail claimcalculator
Before you call your insurer, run the three numbers that decide everything: the deductible in dollars, what depreciation does on an ACV policy, and whether filing nets you anything. Arithmetic, not advice.

Straight-line depreciation over the material's service life; RCV policies typically release withheld depreciation after the work is done. Every policy differs. This is arithmetic, not insurance advice; the numbers that govern are on your declarations page.
The three numbers, in plain terms
Every roof claim conversation in Texas comes down to the deductible, the depreciation and the net. Knowing them before the first phone call changes who is explaining what to whom.
The deductible is a percentage of the house, not the roof
Texas wind/hail deductibles usually run 1% to 2% of Coverage A. On a $350,000 dwelling limit, 2% is $7,000 before the insurer pays a dollar, and it comes off the claim whether the roof estimate is $9,000 or $30,000. That single multiplication answers most “should I even file?” questions.
ACV is where older roofs lose
An ACV policy subtracts the roof's used-up life first. A 15-year-old architectural shingle roof, on a 30-year service life, has given up half its value before the deductible comes off; if the replacement estimate is $18,000, the ACV arithmetic starts at $9,000. An RCV policy starts at the full estimate and typically releases the withheld depreciation once the work is invoiced.
What no roofer can do with any of this
Since 2019, Texas Insurance Code chapter 707 makes it a criminal offence for a contractor to waive, absorb or offset a deductible, or to advertise that they will, and negotiating the claim itself is work for a public adjuster, who holds a TDI licence for it, or your own agent. A roofer's legitimate role is an inspection, a written scope, and doing the work; this site's directory lists companies with their own contact details for exactly that.
San Antonio context
The metro sits in the Texas hail belt, with the season concentrated March through June. The April 12, 2016 storm remains the costliest hail event in Texas history, which is why percentage deductibles are now the norm here and why the arithmetic above is worth running before every spring.
